Jez - 2-5 watts into effecient speakers is pretty loud! - 20W WILL be
too loud for most people to bear. If you are driving really ineffecient
speakers such as LS3/5A's or IMF's or similar (eg anything with a
complex passive crossover) then maybe you would need a lot more power
(current) delivery.

My own system (which can deliver >1.5kW) is rarely called upon to
ACTUALLY deliver more than 25W into the speakers!

What you do get with big amps is lots of dynamic headroom - but that's 
different discussion.
