I appreciate all of the comments and experiences. I should have positioned my original question more as a theoretical exercise. My friend quotes Floyd Toole religiously and the mantra he spouts is that you can never have a system that reaches its full potential unless you have at least one subwoofer integrated into your system. My system overall is not especially expensive and certainly not audiophile. You're correct, I haven't done any measurements. I used the XLO Reference Recordings disk to setup my system and position the speakers. I doubt that I'd invest the time to go any farther unless there were tangible benefits and it sounds like the answer is just maybe.
