These numbers are based on studies on what amount of frequency losses
are audible.

But lower the 5% to whatever percentage you want.  There will be some
sufficient choice of gauge for whatever percentage you choose.  

The second article has a formula for computing insertion loss.  So
choose a value for insertion loss that is acceptable to you and plug in
the minumum impedance of your speakers and the resistance of your wire. 
You can find wire resistance for various gauges 'here'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge).  Personally I find
it easier to work with 14AWG or less.
