USB doesn't need to be problematic at all. Actually the opposite is true since it really transfers raw data. There are just a few gotchas:
You need a decent DAC design to shield against radiation noise. USB is noisy and so are the machines you usually plug it into. You need to have a good clock because you don't want to use the bus' You need your own device driver to make sure that the OS' doesn't manipulate your audio data.
