USB doesn't need to be problematic at all. Actually the opposite is true
since it really transfers raw data. There are just a few gotchas:

You need a decent DAC design to shield against radiation noise. USB is
noisy and so are the machines you usually plug it into.

You need to have a good clock because you don't want to use the bus'

You need your own device driver to make sure that the OS' doesn't
manipulate your audio data. An ASIO driver should do.
