Understood.  And hifi critic has published reports that hard drives
sound different.
One could perhaps be forgiven for thinking there were two John
atkinsons if one reads his measurement reviews on the one hand and the
subjective stuff on the other. 
Some time ago he wrote a piece on what disc spinners measurd well
enough for 16 bit or hi res playback. He said at the time it would be
followed by one on transports and one on dacs. I don't think these
follow ups have appeared. I wonder whether this I'd because his
measurements would have shown that pretty much and transport would do
into any number of cheap dacs. 
Equally I have never seen any measurements of smarts

I appreciate the argument about the possibility that one measures the
wrong things
