Have you looked at the prices for flac downloads in standard redbook quality versus 24bit/88.2, 96, 176.4 & 192 kHz? There most definitely is a very tangible difference and someone is making lots of money based on this difference. Even more money when it turns out (as it sometimes does) that the high resolution files are simply upsampled redbook files.
