Sounds like the Numerik has served you well over the years! Since you're already with the Squeezebox system, I would personally see if I can find a good used SB Touch at a reasonable price and listen to that for a little bit. It's an objective improvement over the SB3 and I suspect it would sound very good as is compared to the Numerik. (BTW: Was this the old Numerik with the original PCM63 DAC or the newer PCM1702?)
This will then open up the opportunity to collect high-res music all the way to 24/192 (with Triode's firmware) using SPDIF or some USB DACs. Plenty of time to consider what DAC you want to use for the next 20 years :-).
