I'm also affected by this. When I was looking around in the kernel
sources, I found this comment in include/linux/fs.h of a vanilla
2.6.24-rc7 kernel:

        /*
         * Not an attribute, but an auxilary info for filesystems wanting to
         * implement an ftruncate() like method.  NOTE: filesystem should
         * check for (ia_valid & ATTR_FILE), and not for (ia_file != NULL).
         */

Maybe that's why they removed it in the Ubuntu kernel?
