Appears the incident was in Class G? Is looking out the window optional?
An outside loop at 1000'AGL sounds like dramatic licence.
As does turning a transponder off for a five hour flight.

The 2006 Hawker / ASG29 (TXP off) midair near Minden was in pretty similar Class E. Repercussions are still being felt.

Is there an excuse for turning a transponder off these days? The gliders involved in both cases have two or optionally three compartments for 12V 8AH SLA or 10AH LiFePO4 batteries.
