When David and I went there, we had to go to an FAA office with our logbooks
(we went to Reno).  The thing that interested them most was the C
certificate book because it had a number and a photo.  So our US licences
were issued for the validity period of that document (which never expires I
think).  They spent some time looking at our logbooks, then issued us with
temorary licences so we could fly at Minden the same day.  We used these
same licences a few weeks later in Hawaii.  The proper licences arrived when
we were back in Australia.

Funny thing was that our licences said aerotow only (despite presentation of
our logbook which had mostly winching in it).  When I queried it, the FAA
guy said that there was no winching anyway (which is not true but we were
not visiting a winch site so it wasn't worth the effort).

Its a very interesting site - we really enjoyed it.  Unfortunately the ridge
wasn't working, but doing circuits that are mostly over the ocean is pretty
cool.  We also had a ride each in a Pitts where our aerobatics flight was
videotaped.
