Our IS-28s (which I believe are very similar to the IS-29) have a note in the Maintenance Release which specifically says they're not to be winch launched because, from memory, the belly release is not being maintained (we're an all-aerotow club). I'm not sure whether that means something special is done to disable the release or "pin" it as you describe.

Perhaps you could contact Tom Gilbert at T & J Sailplanes at Camden Airport, or the maintenance chaps at Gliding Club of Victoria, Benalla, who also had a large IS-28 fleet. They may know more.

Perhaps GFA has an AD relating to this subject ?

Cheers

Hi Peter

Some Tost Releases have multiple mounting holes, and it is possible to mount on the wrong holes for the specific A/C, if this happens it will causes premature back release, this also adjusts the cable release length ( the arm moves relative to the installation) which could also cause "hair trigger" response.

It is a round cage.

Does the IS29 have a round cage or the two parallel NS bars as I am unfamilar with it. In anycase these releases HAVE DIFFERENT SPRINGS. In 3 cases recently I have heard of the wrong spring being fitted to TOST releases. This may not be your trouble but it is worth reminding others of this potentially dangerous situation. Please ask if in doubt

Subject: [aus-soaring] Back release on a CoG tow hook.

Our Club has a Tost belly hook on our IS29. On the winch, it back releases very easily, and has to be "pinned" (back release inactivated) before aerotow. Our maintenance panel is stumped on how to fix it. To me, it feels as if the spring needs replacing but that has been discounted by the panel. One suggestion which has not been tried yet is to change the angle of the installation.

Any ideas?
