Mike, Its the tubine tower (coal power station) - something about the shape I guess. Agree on the environmental side.
As for Texhachapi, the fabricated towers do detract but still find the visual fascinating. The Mojave2 photo takes the cake for me (link). http://www.windland.com/Wind_Turbine_Gallery.html Energy? I would have thought it would not be an issue as surely it is is just conversion and re-conversion same as for solar. Different for energy locked up inside the earth - including your highly preferred nuke station. Birds? Don't know what the strike rate is like. Any stats? Could be an issue for me but again design may be an answer. How do you feel about tidal, geothermal etc? We do digress. I wonder what the effect is of pulling energy out of the boundary layer with windmills?(let alone the bird kill rate) Anyway... What's to like about coal fired power stations? The vast holes in the ground they dig the coal from? The stack effluent? The effluent scrubber disposal ponds? The radioactives going up the stack?(a nuke would be shut down if it emitted the radioactivity that the average coal fired power station emitted) The waste disposal in your lungs? The number of people getting killed mining and transporting coal? Fly over Tarong some time or better still the Hunter valley.
