They did this at the last World Gliding Championships in Poland Can't
see the link on the WGC page any more but here are some examples from LX
http://www.lxnavigation.si/online-tracking/ Doesn't show multiple
pilots anymore.

Surely it would tend to make gliders in comps then gravitate back
together? The trend of the comps scene has been to try and break up the
gaggle scenarios. Wouldn't real time tracking available to the pilot
either by an instrument or by relay from a spectator then lead to a few
daring pilots trying their own thing and then a gaggle chasing whoever
appears to be doing better?

I used to race sailing dinghies (for ~15 years) and your competition was
in sight all the time, and often you could tell a wind shift by looking
at other competitors (often adding to the fun and strategy). There are
many parallels between the two sports, i.e. both can be dead boring for
spectators to observe.

It would certainly add another dimension to competition flying, and I
reckon improve flying by the power of observing others (it is educative
as well as entertaining). Also it would make competing possibly more
'social', i.e. keeping tabs on where you mates are.

On the flipside, such technology may keep your 'head down' in the
cockpit, which is not a good thing in a comp, so an audible annunciator
maybe warranted. It would not be a substitute for poor lookout (given
the caveats of a transponder failing etc.)

It could also entertain the people on the ground with the real time
progress of the glider flights.

Cheers,

Michael

P.S. Don't fret, I am working on my accident stats article, it is just
taking time to get statewide road accident statistics. Watch this space.
