Well you have upset one at least a bit. I am the proud owner of an SZD 55 and have absolutely no evidence of the spar bump that you refer to. There is also another SZD-55 in my club which was the first one into Australia, that one has no evidence of a spar bump either. I have also flown and looked closely at the Glibert SZD-55 and could not see a spar bump in that one. So of the 4 SZD 55s in Australia three to my knowledge have no spar bump. However the same can not be said of Standard Jantars. Nearly all Standard Jantars that I have seen have had the spar bump show up.

However I do agree with you Ian with respect to the Standard Jantars.

I was a part owner of a Jantar Standard 3 from 1994 until 2001 and I flew many kilometres over many hours in the glider often against other Standard 2s. I have also flown a Standard 2 many times.

There is no difference in the wing between the two types. Hence no difference in the polar curve.

The differences between them really show when it comes to the Form 2 time. The Standard 3 is so much easier to work on. Also the forward visibility from the cockpit in the 3 is far superior than in the Std 2. When it comes to annual inspections and maintenance the 3 is far easier to remove the rudder, the tow release and to work on the rudder pedals and instrument panel.

Think performance is the same BUT I do know Jantar 2 is diabolically bad to work on the instrument panel (front canopy fixed)  If with Jantar 2 have one WINTER (not PZL) tube connector ONE 15 pin electrical connector and one BNC extension lead and then and only then would a Jantar 2 be acceptable.  I believe winglets are worthwhile on Jantar.  In strong conditions Jantar is equivalent to LS4 but LS4 may be better in weak conditions.  The winglets could equal up this difference.  Not so sure about construction of Jantar and spar bump but I do know the SZD55 is hard to remove the spar bump (it comes back) but it does not seem to matter much with the 55  My bottom line is get a Jantar 3 if you possibly can.  A Jantar is a poor mans LS4 as an SZD55 is a poor mans Discus 1.  Hope I have not upset people with such statements!
