A friend of mine is in the mountain bike video game, and if I recollect
properly he used up-and-coming muso's tracks without paying significant
royalties by promoting the music heavily in the credits and adding a
promo on the bottom of the screen at each change in music. You of course
still need to get the permission, but any new artist would probably
welcome the publicity, and it may attract a younger crowd.= less terry
towling hats!!

Adam

One of the great problems with "cool music" is that it costs BIG $$$ to
license its use legally.

A few years ago at our Forbes summer camp, a local who did all sorts of
documentaries, etc. came out and filmed during a day or two's flying,
all
using professional equipment. He got a couple of flights in a
two-seater,
and took some air-to-air footage as well.

When edited it came down to just 6 minutes and 15 seconds of footage.

Unfortunately, he added as backing music the remix of the Kenny Loggins
track "Playing with the Boys", from the Top Gun soundtrack. It was not
licensed, so effectively we got left with some well-edited gliding
footage on
DV tape without a usable soundtrack.

I made some inquiries regarding the licensing fees, and we were looking
at
well over $10K in US Dollars. So bye, bye to that idea. And that was
for a
song which was released in 1986. Try and pick up the rights to a song
released recently and you might get a very nasty surprise at the cost.

One of our members who was in the TV production game got a friend who
does
studio music for their programs to create a sound-alike track, different

enough to avoid the lawyers, but still with the same catchy sort of tune

(enough to recognise its origins). However, to edit that back onto the
tape
also means I have to re-capture the other sounds of tugs taking off and
taxiing, varios making that wonderful beep, beep noise, etc. This is
simply
not a trivial exercise, so until I get some serious time to spend on it,
it
remains an unfinished project.

I sent a CD with the video converted to Windows Media format to Terry
Cubley,
the GFA Development Officer, with a suggestion that footage like ours
might
make a better promotion of the sport than re-hashed footage from Lucy
Learns
to Fly, but that it required GFA to spend serious $$$ if they wanted a
well- known soundtrack behind it. My idea never flew ... but at least I
tried.

If someone out there is prepared to host the Windows Media version of
this
video, then I would try and do a quick edit of the soundtrack so that it

could be viewed by those interested in this sort of project.
