How high is 50 ft ? wingspanish ? personally I am not going to look at the
altimeter whilst conducting a LL. Just be realistic about it.
The idea of 50 ft is to allow clearance from most ground based obstacles
including power lines, trees and the odd truck on the highway at Narromine.

Dependant upon speed the affect gets less the higher you are. At 150kts 50
ft wont last long at all, maybe 1 or 2 km if you intend to do a circuit.
Straight in 5km is possible depending on the aircraft. (be really careful if
attempting this (get Cubs to teach you this))

In a perfect world you could go to 1m 5-10km out at 300kmh and still have
120kmh over the fence. 10km in an ASH25 5km in a fully ballasted ASW20b at
Horsham, Ventus c will also do it (so they tell me)ahem.

Low Level is really the end altitude of a long fast final glide to a pre
defined point. You really don't want to waste any energy through manoeuvres
prior to crossing the line, this brings into account the 1km radius finish
line which at some sites is very dangerous, not all aircraft get there with
energy and they are still off site.(I prefer the spectacular and safe high
energy approach)
High energy finishes allow the ability to have either height or speed, both
are like money in the bank. (the dreaded Horsham Nats showed some of the
very best high energy low level finishes and very good airmanship I have
ever seen, been a part of, pitty about the other airmanship problems like
lookout at that particular comp). 20 gliders landing on 1 strip all arriving
at dot feet at the same time, a US aircraft carrier would be in awe of
landing technique and good communications from pilots.

In My Humble Opinion.

I really enjoy a bloody good worm burner also. That may be the next
endorsement we will work on. Then we can play with ground affect and not
hear about it. Its just a case of getting permission to do so after showing
we aren't going to hurt the non participant.

Cheers
Mark

Is a 50ft minimum really low enough to take in ground effects?
