My Grumman nearly caught fire on a 45 degree day first flight after a 100 hourly. The battery leads shorted on the metal battery box because they were not properly shielded. Result was a 1/2 a molten battery in the bottom of the box all green and fizzy.

The LAME apprentice then tried to explain to us that if the battery leads shorted there would not be a problem because the energy couldn't get out (!)

Frankly Mike

I would rather have a gliding person maintain our tow plane. The only downtime's we have had In the last 5 years were immediately after LAME's worked on it.

The cause was VERY poor workmanship. (For example, in one case a condenser mounting bracket had broken. The LAME had cable tied it on. The condensor touched the outer metal jacket of a cable cover and shorted the mag to deck..) I am sure none of our people would have done such a poor repair.
