Speaking as an Arcus pilot for a year, the comments of Matt Gage re performance
are spot on. The two seaters and this includes the big wings such a Nimbuses
and Ashes, all with their large fuselages, just can’t perform at speed when
compared with the better ballasted single seaters, but they are still great fun
to fly. My own impression is the Arcus is not much better than a Duo Discus up
to about 75 knots but after that its flaps give it a distinct advantage . The
3% handicap difference is generally accepted as about right. The Arcus glides
well up to about 85 knots or a bit more. At 100 knots it falls out of the sky
compared with a good ballasted single seater. Schleicher seem to have a
comparative glider in their new ASG 32. In Finland it finished in the middle of
the better performing Arcuses on most days but I can’t see pilots with an Arcus
on order cancelling any time soon. Bernard Eckey will have another excellent
glider to market. He may need it when the latest Ventus is released,

Serial #40. The Shark is a boutique glider but it has a strong following in the
US and particularly the UK.

Standard class definitely seems to be better at high speed.
750kg AUW in 20m class probably doesn't help them either, or at least not
with 16sqm of wing.

I got to see it close up for a short period on the last day. Initial
impressions were not what I had expected (but neither was the Arcus). In the
only thermal we had together, the LS8 at max weight out out climber it and then
was gaining in the cruise at 90 knots. I had expected better from both, but
again, this was 1 climb and a short period gliding together
