Mike ,
there is a number of service bulletins issued by continental and lycoming on
calendar extensions and the reasoning behind.

lycoming Si 1009aw service instruction

Engine  deterioration in  the form of corrosion  (rust) and the  drying  out
and hardening  of
composition materials such as gaskets, seals, flexible hoses and fuel pump
diaphragms can occur if an
engine is out of service for an extended period of time. Due to the loss of a
protective oil film after an
extended period of inactivity, abnormal wear on soft metal bearing surfaces can
occur during engine
start. Therefore,  all engines that do  not accumulate  the  hourly  period  of
TBO  specified  in  this
publication are recommended to be overhauled in the twelfth year.

Continental SL 98-9E i

CM recommends the following factors be used, along with the engine’s published
TBO, to
determine the engine’s continued airworthiness:
1. Environmental corrosion occurs internally and externally on an engine. This
naturally
occurring process can affect continued airworthiness of the engine and engine
mounted
components or accessories. Regardless if the engine has been operated regularly
or has
been in storage; gaskets, seals, and synthetic and natural rubber goods
deteriorate over
time. Replace or overhaul the engine no later than the operating hours or
number of
years for the engine model listed in Table 1 on page 3.

Just hope they don't bring in the Ag limitations for towing.

regards

Peter Heath

=============

There's a nasty rumour going around that CASA is thinking of removing
the calendar life exemptions on piston engines and going for a 10
calendar year overhaul life.
Talked about on pprune and last weekend at the airfield one of the
owners had heard about it from elsewhere.

Could impact cost of launching quite significantly.

Anyone heard any more?

Mike
