Gary,
I don't think a cross-reference field pointing to an external doc
on a web server will work, but I have not looked into that
possibility. A hypertext link will work, but of course the text
of a hypertext link won't update when you change the text in what
it links to... which IMO is the main reason for using a
cross-reference field.
Cheers, Jean

Suppose the individual chapters/docs were located on a web server, and
they were hypertext linked. Could these external docs be
cross-referenced? But no, (in case someone asks) I haven't tried this...

Scott,
Look in the chapter on Master Documents. It should be covered in
there. If not, it should be in the chapter on Working with Fields.
We have not been using x-refs between chapters because they won't work
except within a Master Doc. Fine when generating the whole book, but
not so good for the standalone individual chapters.
Some day I will finish indexing the Writer Guide. That should help all
of us find these more obscure items.

Maybe I missed it in the author's guide or on the Web site (if so,
feel free to hit me over the head with a hard copy and say "Look
*here*, you dummy!"), but I'm having trouble finding how to cross
reference to another chapter in the Writer Guide. Specifically, I
want an x-ref to the templates chapter from the Writer/Web chapter
I'm working on. I'll probably want more x-refs later, but right now I
want this one.
Can somebody provide instructions or tell me where to look?
Thanks!
