www.linuxidentity.com is looking for someone to write a short howto for installing OOo onto Windows, Linux, and Mac. I had a long conversation with them and as follows:

Regarding the Mac version:

I don't know if it is taboo here too, but for Mac, I suggest that a quick reference to NeoOffice is made for Mac users who need to use OSX character input systems out of the box (like Japanese/ Chinese): it is not trivial at all for a normal user to install an X11 input system.

Also, users should be aware that the new Mac native version (without X11 dependency) is being _very_ actively developed and that a pre-alpha test build is available from the official OOo download page. It still contains a few glitches but I work with it everyday and I've not found any major instability issues yet.

Thank you very much, this is very useful.

You're welcome.

I work a lot with the OOo-ja community and here, we don't have any issue with NeoOffice _because_ it provides access to OSX input systems, OSX fonts and other features.

NO is always indicated in OOo books when they refer to the Mac version (cf: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Ja.start_mac)

For people who can use X11 out of the box (basically when the keyboard is enough to input the necessary characters), then OOo/X11 is not so much of an issue though.

As for the native Mac OOo, I presented it at recent Open Source Conferences (Sapporo/Kyoto) -thanks to special build Eric Bachard provided me with- and the Mac OOo crowd here is very excited about the release even though only an alpha will make it for the OOo conference (cf: http://eric.bachard.free.fr/news/2007/07/aquavcl02- aquavcl03-aquaremovefondu.html)

Cheers,

Jean-Christophe
