Ahhhhh, so this is the crux of the problem. Yes, certain tests and
methods only support main_vm, and I'm not surprised unattended install
is one of them. If this was "fixed" would it be a better solution for
you?

Are you aware of why unattended install is limited to main_vm only? Any
reason why we couldn't/shouldn't do multiple installs at the same time?
Well, truth is, we never thought about installing multiple vms on a
single unattended_install test.
N/B: I realize the unattended install test is quite gnarly at present :)
It sure is. About 3 years of adding features and features, and guests.
It would be nice to give it some good work.

I'm not committing to doing it myself (yet/maybe) :) But would like a
sense of whether or not fixing this aspect would help your testing
