Thank you, that did it!
It was libartsc.so.0 which SDL could not find (nevertheless, the kde/lib
directory was in my
LD_LIBRARY_PATH for ages... must be some bug in SDL.)
The configure-test of other libraries (SMPEG) showed that in the error log.
The error log of avifile's configure didn't. Maybe avifile's configure could
be improved a little
there?
btw, why does 'make install' lead into recompiling all over again?
