I am using the ones from 10-10-01, since I had problems compiling
avifile with the ones from 10-25-01. Don't know, if it is fixed now. Anyway.

Avifile can use divx4.02 windows dlls or the linux .so (which you have
installed as described above). So you have to choose divx within you
avifile application. Then, avifile has the possibility to use divx with
the libwin32* plugin or the libdivx* plugin. If your application has not
the possibility to let you directly choose the libxdivx plugin, you can
renmae/remove /usr/lib/avifile0.6/libwin32* files, so avifile must use
the libdivx plugin.
With the libdivx plugin, I have no problems to set the bitrate.
