I could not believe that there are many users which use -mint8 *NOT*. The code becomes slow and very large if this option is not set. My real world applications will not run without -mint8. So I simply have to use the old compiler versions which is not a solution. Because the optimizer never could "see" the ranges of all vars to strip them down to 8bit the only option is to have something like mint8. As I know all commercial embedded compilers have such an option. OK, gcc is not intended for small embedded devices, but for years it works very well.
