Doug Cutting commented on AVRO-366:
-----------------------------------
Ideally JFastLZ would be published in a public Maven repository, and we could
simply add a dependency to it. But that does not appear to be the case. So,
instead we might:
- Include its source in Avro's source tree via an svn:externals link. If we
did this, we should link to a specific revision.
- Copy its source code into Avro. This would effectively fork the code.
I lean towards the latter. In either case, if the JFastLZ makes improvements
that we wish to include then we'll need to manually update Avro's svn to
include them. The former makes the master location of the source clearer, but
in either case we'd include JFastLZ source code in our releases, and it seems
to me that the sources of ASF source code releases should come from ASF
servers. Svn externals also make checkouts and updates slower and less
reliable, so, on balance, I'd rather avoid them.
We should also update the spec, reserving the name used to indicate this codec,
and also decide whether this codec is required of all implementations or not.

> It would be nice to have LZO/LZF/FastLZ compression codec support.
