So far I've been using the Collada format because none of the other options
seemed to show up correctly in Away3D. I needed to install the OpenCollada
plugin, but my model shows up in Away3D exactly as I would expect it to. The
center point and scale are correct, the UV mapping works great. I've had a lot
of problems with different editors and file formats before.

However, I'm curious now, apart from file size, are there runtime advantages to
using the AWD format?

If there are then I'd be very interested in scripting PreFab along with Maya.
I'm not familiar with Maya scripts, but I'm sure that it would be possible to
prompt OpenCollada to export the current model then fire up PreFab afterwards.
In fact, if it doesn't already, it would be really awesome if PreFab supported
command line arguments for at least doing a straight load and export of a model

So long as it exports directly from Maya 2010 and loads well into Away3D, I

you are just a drop/export away using Prefab.

Why so many keep using this format is for me a mystery...

Thats already a good start! But we need more than that, since we want mocap
support as well.

We really need go arround that format. It changes with the wind, and each app
makes its own interpretation of it.
and most of all, it is NOT a suitable webformat.

to be continued...

no but an XSLT could be written to translate the xml files from one to another,
might be a bit painful to start with but once it is done you have a perfect
workflow for your project. Then if everyone shares these XSLT files with AW3D
team we would be able to import any collada without too much headache into aw3d.

I might have a go when I get a moment..

Yes I two have managed to get example COLLADA files in away3D, but
when using my own model with animation - that`s where the "fun"

Thats good idea, thou doesn't sound very convenient.

I stumbled upon this

maybe I don`t need COLLADA if this works, sounds promising.
Does anybody know if it export bones and animation, or is only made
for model ?
