I just noticed that if I reload the config-file, the layout works properly. When I quit awesome and startx it's the wrong layout again, but once I reload the config it's fine.
In the previous version (v3.4-768-ged9f218 as mentioned) the correct layout will work in the prompt without reloading the config.
