Just to say that I have exactly the same problem.
I have two identical monitors, one connected via VGA and the other via HDMI.
When I run the following command awesome 3.5.2 compiled in Xubuntu 13.10
crashes:
$ xrandr --output HDMI1 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --output VGA1 --mode
1920x1080 --rotate right --left-of HDMI1
Wihtout rotating works.
My configuration file is that it has by default. I can provide more information
if you tell me how.
