Then switch the layouts using mod4+space. This way you can press mod4+space to switch to fair layout (that would be your overview layout), then focus the window you want to maximize and hit mod4+space again, which would switch you to max layout with the focused window on top of the stack. > - add window: switch to the overview layout and select a window which is > then added as a new tile to the main layout. I'm not sure what is the difference between this and the previous use case. You don't have to switch layout to open new windows.
