I got this from Justin Biggs on the MBS Newsgroups.  He described a
similar problem to what you describe so it would be worth checking.

"make sure that the Hotfix 913184 for Microsoft Windows 2003 SP1 has 
been installed.  I had the same problem and this took care of it. 
This hotfix for the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) engine is required to
send large packages between clients and servers in Microsoft Dynamics AX."
