Why did it "assume" this? If Google was returning UTF-16, then a) it should have said so in the XML declaration b) the XML parser you (or Axis) were using should understand this
If a) is not true, this is a bug at Google's end, and you should contact them to fix it. If b) is not true, this is a bug in your XML parser, and you should contact the vendor to fix it.
