I can't see any reason why not, perl.com says the current stable release is 5.6.1 (which is what I'm running), has that now changed?

It looks like the patch needs perl 5.8.0 to work without grief. My XS abilities are pretty lame, so I fear I cannot port the patch to older perls. Which perl are you using?
