Yeah, that was my first thought. I took a look at the Apache::Test docs and got lost a lot earlier than I should. :-) It seems a little shy on the examples side of testing a complete round trip. My other concern was that I'm then testing a whole lot more than I'd like, rather than just pushing an XSP through A::A::L::XSP somehow and compareing the resulting XML.
