I don't know exactly what it is, but I think you're missing the *-dev 
packages. You often need those, so if there are any related to the 
packages I install, I usually bring them along at least if I plan to do 
anything beyond simply using them.

When I bump into this kind of problem with Debian, the first thing I do 
is to go to the packages search page, 
 http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
first search through the packages, in any distro. If that doesn't work, 
I try searching through the files, in the lower search field. If you do 
that, it reveals you need libxml2-dev.

That's often how it is! :-)

The Debian libxml2 maintainer is helping me with my problem, and I get 
the same feeling there... :-)
