John, I have to tell you. I have ordered the book - Barnacle Love - and should be receiving it on the 30th. What caught my attention about this book was the fact that the person in the story was from Lomba da Maia, which is where my husband was born. Doing a bit of a search on the internet and reading a short story by Mr. De Sa, I called my husband's aunt who lives in the Toronto area to see if she recognized the name, De Sa, or maybe the Manuel Rebelo, which is the named used in the book. To my surprise, she said, "of course I remember, it is Manuel and Georgina. They lived across the street from my sister (my mother-in-law). I am really interesting in reading this book and seeing Lomba de Maia through Mr. De Sa's eyes. I did visit Lomba da Maia in 1986 and am just curious. I do however realize that it is a fiction story. It is indeed a classic. My mother and many other people who emigrated to the US and Toronto can relate to these books. Brazil had a far worse reputation and many wives feared their husbands going to Brazil, because they knew other people whose spouses simply never returned or were never heard from again. Anthony de Sa is a teacher who grew up and still lives in Toronto. I think people should appreciate that many of his stories, although based on real life, are fictional and were written in different styles. Some stories are surreal and interwoven with the real and the fantastic. So the story about custom of the bride is true, but the details of what happened are indeed fantastic, but no less interesting. Mr. de Sa did a three part interview in Toronto and he said that one of his primary sources of inspiration for his stories is the stories his parents and grandparents related to him.
