Ginnie, Before the women's rights passed in the 1920s, any American woman who married an alien became an alien. That is why you see her as an alien on the 1920 U.S. Census.
Your husband's ancestor most likely came over as Jose. I don't know the Portuguese spelling for Vincent...maybe Vincente? Others who have that name in their family tree will answer. Get the death certificates for the two ancestors and see what it says about their parents and perhaps their birth village. Ask the church about Ethel's baptism and if it lists where the parents were born. You'll also need to find the church where Joseph married Rosa to see if that lists the village.
