It looks like an R. It is connected to the next letter while words in
this handwriting beginning with P are not.
However, the birth date appears to be May 31, 1850. (Maybe I'm wrong...)
Also, the mother's name isn't Beatrice and I don't see Enos. But
then
we know how those Portuguese names are!
