Kathy O, I need some names in order to reconstruct a pedigree so I don't misinterpret who is who's mother's mother's mother and if it's on the maternal side.
On mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)... All DNA samples are compared against the Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS). The test that was ordered (mtDNA Basic or mtDNA Plus) will determine what is reported back to you. If just mtDNA (basic) was ordered, your cousin's mtDNA was compared against a few hundred base pairs on HyperVariable Region 1 (HVR I) only. You'd get something like 126C, 294T, etc reported back. At the location that the geneticists call 126, your cousin had a C (for the chemical cytosine) there instead of what the CRS had. Now, if your cousin had the mtDNA Plus test, he'll have 2 regions reported back (HVR1 and HVR 2). This covers something like 800 base pairs. Again, instead of giving you all 800, they only report the differences back to you. Nicole mentioned the book "The Seven Daughters of Eve" by Bryan Sykes. See if your local library has it. It explains haplogroup T (your cousin belongs to subgroup T2) and the nickname of "Tara." There are 4 T2's in the Azores DNA project so far.
