Beatrix, I checked Ancestry and his name is spelled Joao de Sousa Palheiro on the ship's manifest. Sailing from Ponta Delgada January 7, 1916 on the ship Roma. His father is Manuel Sousa Palheiro, Ponta Delgada. Joao is going to join his sister Guilherma P. Lima in Provincetown. It says he was born in Ponta Delgada. So, if you can navigate the CCA site, going backward from January 7, 1916 for Passportes Sao Miguel, you should be able to find his info there. I will try and search also after dinner.
On his WWII Draft card, he uses the name Manuel Sousa Palheiro so I would guess this is the name he did use in the US.
