Adair,

You may not get back to Portugal.  There are times we run into the "pai
incognito" and cannot research back any further.  There are times when the
records run out and that ancestor is what is called the "end of line"
ancestor.  Sometimes the records are so badly damaged we can't read them.

Out of all my lines, I've only been lucky enough to trace 2 of them off of
the Azores islands.  I had to trace each generation back in time to
something like the 1400 or 1300s.  I have very few lines that go back that
far (I have many in the 1700s and some in the 1600s).  So if you want to go
back to the continent of Portugal, trace each line back one generation at a
time and see if you hit a line that comes from the continent.
