I have a colleague of mine from S. Pedro-VFC, who is a Sousa Batata. I forwarded your e-mail to her and perhaps she will respond directly to you. She remembers that there were two unrelated Sousa Batata families in V.F. but I have told her that in my view, given the unusual Batata (potato) surname (which probably originated as an "alcunha") truncated with Sousa, it is much more likely that they have the same Sousa Batata ancestor.
I have the following: Modified Register for José de Sousa Batata-128651 First Generation 1.José de Sousa Batata-128651 was born in S. Pedro-VFC. José married (MRIN:51150) Senhorinha Amália-128652 . Senhorinha was born in S. Pedro-VFC. They had the following children: 2M i. José de Sousa Batata-128653 was born in S. Pedro-VFC. + 3M ii. Francisco de Sousa Batata-128654 was born in 1867. Second Generation 3.Francisco de Sousa Batata-128654 (José de Sousa) was born in 1867 in S. Pedro-VFC. Francisco married (MRIN:51151) Jacinta da Conceição-128655 in S. Pedro-VFC. Jacinta was born in 1860 in S. Pedro-VFC. They had the following children: 4F i. Maria Batata-128656 was born in 1895 in S. Pedro-VFC. 5M ii. Francisco Batata-128657 was born in 1898 in S. Pedro-VFC. 6M iii. João Batata-128658 was born in 1900 in S. Pedro-VFC. I also have a Manuel de Sousa Batata and his wife Catarina Ferreira living in Ponta Garça about 1700. (This information is from George Pacheco). Maybe this will help. Good luck! I am new to this group, although I've been doing geneaolgy research on my family for about 20 years now, on and off. I'm starting up again. Specifically, I've begun research the Sousa Batata family from Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel. I'm wondering if anyone else has this name in their tree. My grandfather was Jayme de Sousa Batata (1884 - 1950). He immigrated to Plymouth, MA in 1907. My great grandfather was Jose De Sousa Batata (1844 -1914). He also immigrated to Plymouth, MA. He was a stone cutter (cabouqueiro). My 2nd great grandfather was Francisco de Sousa Batata, and his father was Henrique de Sousa Batata. I don't have a lot of information on them.....I'm working on it. If anyone is related or has any information, let me know.
