Gayle:

You can go the web page for the Diocese of Fall River and look for the address,
(maybe e-mail) phone number and name of the pastor for that church. The
marriage record should state the name of the groom's parents and depending on
the period and how detailed the record, might tell you where he was baptized. I
would suggest you write a very succinct e-mail detailing exactly what you are
looking for. The parish secretary might just e-mail you back with the
information you need (the parish register is at her fingertips). I would not
bother asking for a certificate; those modern documents (fill in the blank) do
not have a place for the information you want, e.g. where grandpa was baptized.
In the Diocese of Fall River there is no charge for a marriage record, but if
you want a certificate I would suggest sending along a stamped self-addressed
envelope. The degree of response for purely genealogical interests varies from
parish to parish depending on whether
the priest is into genealogy, or can't understand what all this interest in
dead ancestors is all about.

Good luck!

John

John,

My grandparents were married there. I'm trying to find info on my grandfather's
parents. All I have have is a birthplace: Providence RI around 1873 for my
grandfather.

Thanks for your help.

This question is for those back on the East Coast. Attached is a copy of my
grandparents marriage certificate from Taunton, MA. While I've had great
success with my grandmother's side of the family back on Pico, I've been at a
dead end with my grandfather's side. Years ago I wrote to the Diocese of
Providence (where my grandfather was born) to inquire about a birth record for
my grandfather with the hope of finding out about his parents Manuel Silveira
Machado and Anna Lemos. The answer I received said to contact a parish in Fox
Point where he suspected they might have lived, as it had the highest
concentration of Portuguese. Is there anyone who knows anything about this
parish ? My grandfather was born around April 1873, but I don't have an exact
date. He was a twin.

Thanks,
Gayle
