I’m having a hard time finding my grandfather and grandmother on a passport or ship list. They came from Sao Miguel and their names are Quitao de Souza aka Caitano Souza, and his wife was Maria Ferreira Souza. I do know they came to Hawaii in 1883. I’m still trying to find if their names are on the ship list.

I am only trying to compile some rough numbers regarding how many people may have travailed illegally from Portugal to the United States. My research has shown, so far, that many individuals were not aware that they were even traveling illegally or that they were aiding illegal travel!
