Re: indices - check the end of the decade (or there abouts) of the year you 
are researching - occasionally, an index follows the events for that 
specified period. 
 
As for the (duplicate) records - again, you may be reading more into the 
document than the scribe may have intended - usually, a duplicate record of 
the event was created at the same time as the original, and forwarded to 
the mother church of the district. However, the church also kept duplicate 
ledgers, as a backup, in case of disaster such as fire, flood, earthquake, 
volcanic eruption, (and, the occasional spilling of the ink bottle all over 
the page) etc... Given the cost of materials back in the day, copies 
("certidaoes") were not "given" to the principals, or their descendants 
- unless it was for a specific event, or purpose (confirmation, 
marriage, funeral, etc). When such records were required, a notation was 
made in the left margin of the ledger page listing the date it (the 
"certidao") was issued.
