In Norte Grande (Sao Jorge) where I am researching, Our Lady is invoked as
madrinha ("touching her crown on the head of the baby being baptized") much of
the time, not when there is danger of death. This seems to be in the 1880s and
1890s (and maybe other times). Maybe it was "fashionable". In Norte Grande its
often Nossa Senhora das Neves, patron of that church, or Nossa Senhora do
Rosario.

It would be interesting to know the origin of this custom.
