Hi Mel and Luis,
The relatives you are mentioning are related to me by my grandmother,
Francisca Carreiro (Remigio) Pacheco from Maia, Sao Miguel Azores. My
grandmother came originally in 1905 through Ellis Island but her sponsor
didn't show up unit too late and as the ship was pulling out he was at the
dock and she and her children were returned but went to Italy for several
weeks before returning to the Azores. She then came to the US in 1911 in
Fall River but went back to the Azores during the depression in 1929. My
mother, Maria do Carmo Carreiro, born in Fall River left at age 15 went to
the Azores and returned to the US through Ellis Island with my 7 siblings.
Most of us live in the Boston area but some are in VA, NY and NH. My late
uncles, Luis,Manuel and Jose are Fransica's children.
All of them including my mother are deceased now. The Maria you mentioned
who married Andre Serpa was not my mother but my mother's sister, Maira
Julia. There is a website called www.amigosdamia.com that has many old
photos of people from the Maia. There are many people form Maia living in
the Boston area as well as Fall River who are cousins of the family you
mentioned. There are more details that my older siblings will recall. The
name Muniz is incorrect and is Moniz which is my father's family name. My
father's grandparents were from the Alentejo in the mainland from the town
of Serpa and they left the mainland in 1850 and came to the US and Canada
but returned to the Azores where they raised their 10 children.

PS. My grandmother and also your relatives are related to Gary Remigio
Pereira, one of the Canadian Tenors (whose parents are from Maia) and David
Leite (James Baird award winning culinary chef and author) and Craig De
Mello (Nobel Peace Prize Recipient) for cancer research. You can google
them for further info. Maia only has 1800 people and is in the northeast
part of Sao Miguel.

Look forward to hearing from you. Clara Carreiro Serpa
