They were not treated will. They were treated like the slaves in the Southern United States. They completed their required years of service for their passage to Hawaii and then left the islands. Some went to California. Marilyn On Fri, Oct 19, 2012 at 4:55 PM, Diane <ddon...@bigpond.net.au> wrote: Hi Mel I found one of your statements of interest in this story. You wonder what drew Manuel away from Hawaii. I am going through the same dilemma with my GGrandfather Joaquim Machado Pereira from Sao Jorge who left Hawaii and went to Australia in about 1870. In his case I think it was something to do with the whaling industry. Manoel Carreiro (son Jose Carreiro & Maria Augusta do Couto) of Maia, m. Maria Claudina (dau of Jose Muniz Serpa & Claudina Perreira). They migrated to Hawaii in 1882 on the Hansa. Manoel's sister, Francisca, married on of my gr gr grandfather's cousin's, Diniz de Braga. They also went to Kauai. I couldn't find Manoel's family in Hawaii, but in 1900 two of his children are living with Diniz and Francisca. A couple of years ago, another researcher contacted me about a Manuel Carreiro of Fall River, MA. It turns out this Manuel Carreiro was the son of Manoel Carreiro and Maria Claudina. Manuel Jr. left Kauai and married Annine Cecila Silva in Fall River, MA in 1901. I have been trying to learn more about this family because it fascinates me. I wonder what drew Manuel Jr away from Hawaii. Almost everyone else in the family who left Hawaii ended up in Monterey Co. or Oakland, CA. This is my first known instance of a Hawaii cousin going to Massachusetts. Recenlty, I've learned that their may have been more Muniz Serpa's who came to Fall River, MA. I'm following the trail of Ignes M. Serpa, dau of Francisco M. Serpa & Ermelinda da Camara, who married my distant cousins Jacintho Pacheco Remigio in Fall River, 25 Jan 1905. I'm not certain yet but I believe the Ignes is related to Maria Claudina (Muniz Serpa) Carreiro. I'm still trying to piece it altogether, but it appears that their were Carriero's and Muniz Serpa's of the same family in Fall River as early as 1900 on Columbia St. They had my de Mello Castanho's living with them which would make a whole circle of connections to Maia, Ribeira Grande. Is anyone connected to the Carreiro/Muniz Serpa/de Braga/Pacheco Remigio/de Mello Castanho's of Fall River, MA and Maia, Ribeira Grande? Perhaps there is someone who has the missing clues to the puzzle.
