Liz M, It depends on your goal. Many people wait for the December and Summer sales and do a DNA test.
I did Y-DNA and Family Finder on my dad. I did mtDNA and Family Finder on my mom. I've done Y-DNA on a couple of my American lines (focusing only on that one line). I finally did my Family Finder test earlier this year, but that's only so I can one day phase my data with my parents' Family Finder. All had different goals.
