I think I might have figured it out. My mother and others always insisted Serafina was a half sister and Rosa was the mother. It's possible Rosa did indeed give birth, give the child to a church and later after marrying Manoel, took the child back. The family story goes that Rosa was forced to provide "favors" as a young girl to her father's boss so her father could keep his job.
